Kakumiro man hacked to death stealing cattle
By the time of this report, police had arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Kakumiro: A man in his 30s has been hacked to death while allegedly attempting to steal cattle from a kraal in Kisiita Sub-County, Kakumiro District.
The deceased, identified only as Mulundi, was reportedly part of a group of three thieves who attempted to break into the kraal of 74-year-old Venansi Kazarugamba in the early hours of Friday morning.
Kazarugamba, who has been a target of theft in the past, said he was alerted when he heard his cows mooing and decided to investigate.
Upon arriving at the kraal, he found the other thieves had fled, leaving only Mulundi behind. A confrontation ensued, during which Kazarugamba acted in self-defense, fatally injuring Mulundi.
According to Kazarugamba, this was not the first attempt to steal his cattle. Over time, there have been several such incidents, prompting him to build a perimeter wall around his kraal to enhance security. Despite these measures, however, the thieves still targeted his livestock, leading to the violent altercation.
The incident has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among local residents, who are concerned about the growing number of young people engaging in criminal activities.
Sekiwelo Alikangyero, the Kyobu LCI Chairperson, pointed to the alarming trend of drug addiction among youth, which they say contributes to the rise in theft and other illegal behaviors. Alikangyero emphasized that many young individuals, rather than seeking productive opportunities, are instead turning to crime.
Zaverias Byarugaba, the Kyobu Parish Chairperson, also expressed concern over the effect of cattle theft on local farmers, particularly those who have invested in livestock through government programs such as the PDM (Program for the Modernization of Agriculture).
According to Byarugaba, livestock theft is causing significant financial losses, particularly for PDM beneficiaries who had hoped to improve their livelihoods by investing in farming.
The Kisiita Sub-County LCIII Chairperson, Moses Twimukye, has called on criminals to reconsider their actions or face severe consequences.
Twimukye’s statement underscores the urgency for stronger law enforcement and community-based solutions to curb rising crime in the region.
By the time of this report, police had arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation into the incident. Authorities are working to gather more information on the events leading up to Mulundi’s death and determine the next steps in the case.
