Kagadi VHTs storm district offices over unpaid allowances

Several VHTs accused the Resident District Commissioner’s office of ignoring their grievances, further escalating tensions.

Kagadi: Members of Village Health Teams (VHTs) in Kagadi District recently stormed the office of the District Health Officer (DHO), demanding an explanation regarding unpaid allowances for their work during a recent measles and rubella vaccination campaign.

The VHTs mobilized after hearing a fake announcement on local radio stations, instructing them to report to the Kagadi District Community Hall for payment. Upon arrival, they discovered the announcement was false, leading to frustration and financial losses due to unnecessary transportation costs.

The unpaid allowances and misinformation have caused discontent among the VHTs, with some alleging conflicting figures for their pay. Reports suggest the promised amounts ranged from 120,000 UGX to 50,000 UGX for six days of work, adding to the confusion and mistrust.

Several VHTs accused the Resident District Commissioner’s office of ignoring their grievances, further escalating tensions.

Tumwebaze Aisha Justine, Kagadi District Health Educator, addressed the incident, confirming the announcement was false and likely intended to incite unrest.

She reassured the VHTs that the district health department, in collaboration with the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), is actively working to process payments.

“We are committed to resolving the issue and ensuring that all VHTs receive their allowances before Christmas,” Tumwebaze assured.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by VHTs, who play a critical role in delivering essential health services in rural areas. The delay in allowances and misinformation have not only affected their morale but also exposed inefficiencies in communication and administration within the district.

As the district health office works to address the issue, the VHTs have called for transparency and timely payment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
