Kagadi mentally ill mother stabs her 4-month-old baby

The baby’s body has since been handed over to relatives for burial.

Kagadi: A wave of shock and sorrow has engulfed Nyakasema Cell in Ruteete Town Council following a harrowing incident in which a mentally ill mother allegedly stabbed her four-month-old baby to death.

The baby boy, identified as Moses Mbabazi, was reportedly attacked by his 22-year-old mother, Daphine Birungi, on Sunday at around 1:00 PM.

According to Alex Byarugaba, the LC1 Chairperson of Nyakasema Cell, Birungi has battled long-term mental health challenges and was living alone at the time of the incident.

Police officers from Ruteete Town Council responded to the scene and confirmed the tragic event. George Turwomwe, the Officer in Charge at Ruteete Police Station, stated that the baby was initially rushed to Kagadi General Hospital and later transferred to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for advanced medical care.

Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, the parents were forced to return home, where the child died shortly afterward.

Turwomwe further noted that no arrest has been made, citing Birungi’s known mental health condition. However, local authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure community safety.

The baby’s body has since been handed over to relatives for burial.

The incident has once again raised urgent concerns about mental health support systems, especially for vulnerable individuals living in isolated conditions.

Residents have called on authorities to strengthen access to mental health care, particularly in rural and underserved areas like Ruteete.
