Kagadi: The Kagadi district probation officer, Steven Banakora Kiyaga, says they are yet to identify the parents or relatives of the 10-month-old baby girl who was abandoned on the roadside in Kicucura Sub-County.
The baby was abandoned in Murere village, Kicucura Sub-County, along the Bugwara-Kakindo road.
Kicucura residents, in collaboration with local leaders, managed to save the child and handed her over to a woman identified as only Nalongo for care.
Nalongo says the child has now developed an illness and has been admitted to a healthy facility for treatment.
She is calling for support from good-hearted people to save the child.
Banakora has asked residents who might have any information about a mother whose baby is missing to share it with police and other authorities so that the perpetrator can be arrested.
He calls for community support in looking after the child as the government makes an effort to identify charity organizations or the babies’ care homes to save their lives.
According to the 2022 police crime report, the institution recorded an increase of 23 percent in child desertion crime.
Police blame the crime of abandoning babies on fathers denying paternity, unwanted pregnancies, and parents struggling to afford to keep them.
