Kabarole pens down MoU with LAPSNET to prevent crimes

The five-year project will see 20 community legal champions trained in case management. These will also receive bicycles to ease their work.

Kabarole: Kabarole District Local Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET), aimed at crime prevention in communities.

During the event held on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the district headquarters in Kitumba, Sylivia Namubiru, the Chief Executive Officer of LASPNET, noted that the project aims at putting an end to extremism, illicit financing, and drug abuse to have a crime-free society.

Namubiru explained that through this project, crime prevention and reporting mechanisms will be strengthened to ensure that cases are reported effectively and to serve justice.

The five-year project will see 20 community legal champions trained in case management. These will also receive bicycles to ease their work.

Steven Rubaihayo, the Chief Administrative Officer for Kabarole, said that the project will help to prevent crimes, especially domestic violence, thus increasing the production and livelihoods of people in the district.

Richard Rwabuhinga, the Kabarole District Chairman, commended LASPNET for coming at a time when most youths are struggling with drug addiction. He noted that there’s always a high crime rate in tea plantation communities, which he says will be addressed.

He explained that people whose income has been affected by a fall in tea prices need support to ensure that they engage in other income-generating activities than drug abuse.

Rwabuhinga also noted that the crime prevention concept will also act as a yardstick to end violence in communities. He also tasked the project implementers to ensure mediation and reconciliation during case management to end prison congestion.
