Jinja Muslims call for govt intervention in Mvule Crescent land dispute

He concluded by commending Mufti Mubajje for his efforts in advancing the interests of Muslims and making notable progress despite criticism.

Jinja: The Jinja District Sheikh, Ismail Adi Basooga, has called upon the government to intervene in the ongoing legal disputes surrounding Mvule Crescent land, which was allocated to Muslims in 1974 by the late President Idi Amin Dada.

Sheikh Adi made the appeal during Eid prayers at the Mvule Crescent grounds, where a large congregation gathered to mark the end of Ramadan fasting.

Unresolved land issues hindering development

During his address, Sheikh Adi emphasized that land disputes have delayed development projects, including the unfinished mosque, which was intended to serve as the central mosque for Jinja City and the wider Busoga region.

He also reminded the government about the cemetery land allocated to Muslims by Jinja Hospital, noting that the half-acre plot is insufficient for the Muslim community. While surveyors had visited the site as part of the government’s pledge to buy additional land, no further steps have been taken.

Call for Unity, Faith, and Social Harmony

While delivering the khutbah, Sheikh Adi urged Muslims to remain calm and peaceful, emphasizing that the discipline upheld during Ramadan should extend beyond the holy month. He encouraged Muslims to complete the Five Pillars of Islam, describing them as essential to leading a fulfilling and spiritually rewarding life.

He also urged families to avoid domestic violence, highlighting that his office receives weekly reports of domestic disputes.

He expressed concern over a rising trend of violence against men in Busoga region, where some women have been involved in genital mutilation of their husbands, in some cases leading to fatalities.

Sheikh Adi also raised concerns about the increasing cases of robbery in the region. He cited a recent incident where his own son was attacked after paying a national water bill in Jinja.

His son was beaten, robbed of his money and phone, and left injured yet no members of the community intervened to help him. He called on security agencies to step up efforts in tackling crime and protecting residents.

The Sheikh also urged respect for leaders at all levels, stressing the importance of patience and appreciation of leadership. He addressed criticism surrounding the extended tenure of the Mufti, encouraging people to wait for the next election rather than engaging in negative discourse.

He concluded by commending Mufti Mubajje for his efforts in advancing the interests of Muslims and making notable progress despite criticism.

With these pressing concerns and calls for action, the Muslim community in Jinja City hopes that the government will take urgent steps to resolve land disputes, enhance security, and support social harmony in the region.
