Zombo: The third edition of the Annual Education and Environment Run 2024 has successfully launched in Zombo District, organized by the local non-governmental organization Life Concern with funding from COOPERAID, a Switzerland-based NGO.

The event kicked off on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the Pakadha Primary School playground in Abanga Sub-county, with participants from three sub-counties: Abanga, Jangokoro, and Paidha Town Council.

The initiative, under the project “Alochi Ku Somu,” is aimed at promoting education, environmental conservation, and the retention of girls in school. Denis Ocuna, the Program Officer at Life Concern, spoke on behalf of the Executive Director, Kakura Emmy Kizito, highlighting that the event also features a free medical camp for the local community, awards for top performers, and a focus on raising awareness about environmental conservation.

The LCIII Chairperson of Abanga Sub-county, Richard Awekunimungu, expressed his appreciation for the support the organization has provided, especially towards enhancing the retention of girls in school, as well as the renovation of teachers’ houses and classrooms within the sub-county. He also urged the youth to use the resources provided wisely, steering clear of distractions such as alcohol.

Participants were encouraged to become ambassadors for sustainable farming practices and tree planting, both of which are crucial for addressing global environmental issues.

The event also underscored the importance of adhering to the 1998 Land Act, which prohibits the owning, building, or farming in wetlands due to the severe environmental degradation and climate change impact it causes.

Zombo District Sports Officer, Aziz Onim, commended the NGOs for their efforts in organizing such a valuable event. Under his supervision, participants competed in a variety of events, including cross-country runs and 100- and 200-meter races for both junior and senior categories, with separate competitions for boys and girls.

Koi Alex, representing the Zombo District Education Officer, also expressed gratitude for the organization’s generous contributions, particularly in supporting the education sector. He encouraged participants to adopt positive attitudes towards tree planting, emphasizing its role in combating climate change.

The athletes were awarded various prizes, including cash, solar lamps, and energy-saving devices, to help reduce reliance on firewood, which exacerbates climate change.

Girls were flagged off at Pakadha Primary School Playground, marking the start of the event on December 2, 2024.
