Houses burned in Kitgum amid suspected land disputes
He mentioned that a planned meeting to address broader security issues in the greater Orom area was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
Kitgum: Three houses in Kitgum District were burned to ashes on Monday, November 18, 2024, in what authorities suspect to be a result of ongoing land disputes.
Geoffrey Oguti, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kitgum, confirmed the incident, noting that security forces, including the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), were swiftly deployed to the scene to prevent further violence.
Oguti called for calm and urged the communities involved to resolve their disagreements peacefully, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over conflict.
The RDC also mentioned that a planned meeting to address broader security issues in the greater Orom area was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
Among the issues requiring attention were reconciliation efforts between sub-clans in Orom East Sub-county, ongoing National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) registration activities in Orom Sub-county, and concerns over suspected elephant invasions.
Oguti clarified that while there were no recent reports of Karamojong cattle rustler raids in the area, the region remains under close observation to ensure peace and stability.
