Hoima woman attempts suicide over debts
By press time, Murungi was still receiving treatment at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
Hoima: Residents of Kiryatete West Cell in Hoima East Division on Monday thwarted a suicide attempt by a woman in her 30s identified as Winfridah Murungi, who reportedly tried to take her own life after accumulating debts amounting to UGX 4 million.
Godfrey Mucwa, the area defense secretary, revealed that he received a call from a guesthouse proprietor (name withheld) reporting a client who had locked herself in a room for more than a day without coming out.
Concerned residents peered through a ventilator and saw the woman lying unconscious on the bed. They immediately alerted Hoima Central Police, who authorized the breaking of the room to rescue her.
Upon entering the room, the rescuers found Murungi unconscious with a suicide note beside her. The note indicated that she was overwhelmed by debts owed to various people, including her own mother.
Mucwa urged people facing challenges to seek support from friends or community members, emphasizing that suicide is not a solution to financial problems.
By press time, Murungi was still receiving treatment at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
