Hoima leads in HIV/AIDS prevalence in Bunyoro

According to recent data, Hoima City has a prevalence rate of 6.7%, which is higher than the national average of 5.4%.

Hoima: Hoima city in Bunyoro Subregion is currently having the highest HIV/AIDS rate of 6.7 percent.

This was disclosed by Jennifer Kacha Namuyangu, the State Minister for Bunyoro Affairs, on Thursday May 16, 2024 during the Bunyoro region stakeholders meeting organized by the Uganda AIDS Commission and held at Hoima district council hall in Kasingo.

Namuyangu disclosed that, as they review the presidential track to end HIV by 2030, more synergies are needed.

She also says the high rates in Hoima City and Masindi district are being attributed to oil and gas activities, adding that the youths are living a reckless lifestyle.

Namuyangu called upon the companies working in oil and gas to always sensitize the masses since there is an influx of people due to oil activities.

She has implored all stakeholders to use whatever platform they get to sensitize the public and talk about HIV and AIDS.

Robert Rukahemura, the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Minister of Culture at  explained that there is a need for more interventions to fight the virus since most of the districts in the region have alarming numbers of people living with AIDS.

This is in preparation for the Candlelight Memorial Commemoration Day scheduled to take place today, May 17, 2024, in Hoima City.

This annual event serves as a poignant tribute to the lives lost to AIDS and honors those who have dedicated their lives to supporting people living with and affected by HIV.

According to recent data, Hoima City has a prevalence rate of 6.7%, which is higher than the national average of 5.4%.

The situation is particularly worrying among young people aged 18 to 25. Factors contributing to this increase include transactional sex, a lack of HIV testing, and stigmatization of positive individuals.

Poverty often drives adolescents to engage in risky sexual behavior, especially with older partners who may not prioritize condom use or testing before intercourse.
