Gulu: Gulu City Mayor, Hon. Okwonga Alfred, has accused several key leaders of complicity in the controversial Pece Wetland scandal near Cynbabel Supermarket in Gulu City.
The officials named include his deputy, Hon. Olok Christine Angeyo, Gulu City Speaker Hon. Alima Joy Renny, Deputy Speaker Hon. Akena Lameck Lambert, Clerk to the Council Phillian Nyama, and LCV Councillor Hon. Ogwetta Andrew Otto.
In an interview on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Mayor Okwonga called for the accused individuals to apologize to the people of Gulu City and the broader Acholi community.
He criticized their alleged involvement in the wetland transfer, stating that they disregarded the presidential directive on wetlands, Gulu City’s position, resolutions of the executive committee, as well as guidelines from the security committee and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
Okwonga accused the implicated leaders of misleading councillors, which he said has resulted in public outcry and the current scandal. He urged them to reverse their decision to restore public trust and safeguard the integrity of the city’s leadership.
On Thursday, November 28, 2024, Gulu City councillors approved the transfer of the Pece Wetland in Green Valley Cell to Oil Energy Company for the establishment of a fuel station.
The decision has sparked outrage among environmentalists and community members.
On the morning of Tuesday, December 10, 2024, a group of Gulu City Wetland Activists blocked Mayor Okwonga from appearing on a local media station, accusing him of involvement in the wetland giveaway.
The activists are demanding immediate action from the Mayor, including convening an emergency Council meeting to revoke the earlier resolution.
