Government kicks off road repairs in Zombo amid public outcry
As the 2026 general elections approach, residents and leaders alike are calling for tangible results, not just campaign promises.
Zombo: The government has launched emergency road rehabilitation works in Zombo District, focusing on murram pouring and repairing severely damaged road sections under central government jurisdiction.
The intervention, initiated on Friday, August 22, comes after weeks of prolonged heavy rainfall that rendered several roads impassable, with heavy-duty trucks stranded for days.
Currently, repair works are ongoing at the Ayuda incline in Abanga Sub-County, while challenges persist at Nyagak Hill in Nyapea Sub-County, where the terrain remains treacherous and waterlogged.
Local leaders and aspiring politicians have criticized the temporary nature of the repairs.
“We need a permanent solution by tarmacking the road. These temporary fixes won’t solve the problem,” said Francis Bolingo, District Councillor, Athuma Sub-County
Sarah Adong, a Zombo Woman MP aspirant on the Democratic Party (DP) ticket, posted a video of herself wading through mud on Nyagak Hill, stating:
“Ladies and gentlemen, the plight of Zombo calls for a holistic approach beyond political lines. Should we remain the same? Should we stay silent? Should cliques just fight for supremacy over Zombo’s agenda?”
The deplorable condition of key roads has triggered widespread public frustration, especially among youth, who have taken to social media to expose the harsh realities.
Photos and videos shared online depict people, vehicles, and motorcycles struggling through thick mud, drawing nationwide attention to Zombo’s infrastructure crisis.
Former Okoro County MP, Eng. Simon D’Ujanga, recently revealed that the Ministry of Finance diverted funds earmarked for the tarmacking of the 119km Nebbi–Goli–Paidha–Zombo–Zeu–Warr–Vurra road not once, but three times during his tenure.
The road, which serves as a vital corridor for trade and transport in the West Nile region, remains in a critical state, despite being repeatedly promised for upgrade.
President Yoweri Museveni has publicly pledged to tarmac the Nebbi–Zombo road on multiple occasions Zombo in 2022, Nebbi in 2024, and most recently in Yumbe earlier this year. Yet, no concrete timelines or budget allocations have been communicated to date.
As the 2026 general elections approach, residents and leaders alike are calling for tangible results, not just campaign promises.
For many in Zombo, road repairs are not just about convenience they are a matter of economic survival, dignity, and equality.
