Fort Portal: Fort Portal City has made a significant leap in boosting its tourism sector with the launch of Airtel’s 4G Internet services, a move aimed at enhancing the city’s digital infrastructure.

The event, which attracted local leaders, business owners, and youth representatives, highlighted the essential role of fast and reliable internet in showcasing tourism products to a global audience.

Richard Rwabunga, the former Chairman of the Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA), praised Airtel’s 4G network for accelerating Fort Portal’s transformation into a smart city.

He emphasized that high-speed internet is vital for fostering innovation, research, and digital inclusion, ultimately leading to economic growth and improved livelihoods.

“With improved digital infrastructure, Fort Portal can effectively implement smart technology initiatives, improving livelihoods and economic growth,” Rwabunga stated.

Albert Ahebwa, the City Speaker, also shared his excitement, adding, “This milestone marks a significant step toward achieving our vision of a smart city with smart people and smart technology. With Airtel’s reliable and high-speed internet, our residents, businesses, and institutions will be empowered to innovate, research, and access limitless opportunities.”

Peter Kusemererwa, the Assistant City Clerk, urged residents and business owners to embrace faster internet as a tool for marketing tourism-related products. He noted that the improved connectivity would allow businesses to access international markets more efficiently, boosting the city’s revenue and spurring overall development.

“This will not only enhance business growth but also contribute to the economic transformation of Fort Portal,” Kusemererwa remarked.

The OC Station CPS, ASP Charles Muhereza, also spoke during the event, advising the youth to use the internet responsibly, particularly in the context of the ongoing election period.

He cautioned against the misuse of the internet for illegal activities, stressing that spreading false information or engaging in cyber-related offenses could have serious legal consequences.

“While we celebrate the advancement in internet technology, I urge the youth to use this opportunity responsibly. The internet should be a tool for growth and development rather than for activities that could lead to legal trouble,” Muhereza emphasized.

Airtel Uganda’s Regional Business Manager, Mathias Basulwa, reiterated the company’s commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure to meet the growing demands of Fort Portal’s population.

He explained that the improved 4G network would empower businesses, improve service delivery, and support the city’s development goals.

“By investing in network improvement, we are ensuring that the ever-increasing population within Fort Portal and our customers are served according to demand. Our 4G network will empower businesses, improve service delivery, and support the city’s development goals,” Basulwa said.

He also cautioned the public to be vigilant against fraud scams and to never share their personal PINs, even if requested by Airtel staff.

The launch of Airtel’s 4G Internet is poised to revolutionize communication and business in Fort Portal, offering significant benefits to the tourism sector while promoting digital safety and responsible internet usage.

Local businesses and entrepreneurs have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism about the economic opportunities that come with enhanced internet connectivity.
