Farmers cautioned against fake money circulation during harvest season
Farmers are advised to use currency detection tools and deal with trusted buyers to minimize risks.
Kitgum: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kitgum District, Mr. Ssegawa Nehemiah Jimmy Ebil, has raised concerns about the increased circulation of counterfeit currency during the ongoing harvest season.
He called on the community to stay vigilant and take proactive steps to avoid falling victim to fraudulent activities.
In an interview with this publication, Mr. Ebil highlighted that the festive period often attracts traders with ill intentions, including introducing fake money into circulation.
He urged farmers to meticulously check banknotes for authenticity and to ensure the weighing scales they use are certified by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).
“Counterfeit currency and substandard weighing equipment are common tools used to exploit unsuspecting farmers during this season,” said Mr. Ebil. “I strongly encourage everyone to carefully verify both money and equipment before proceeding with transactions.”
He further appealed to community leaders to work closely with local authorities to educate and protect their members against such schemes.
Farmers are advised to use currency detection tools and deal with trusted buyers to minimize risks. The RDC also emphasized the importance of reporting any suspicious activities to law enforcement to safeguard the local economy and livelihoods.
