Fallen referee Kabugo to be laid to rest today in Buikwe

Kampala: The sports community in Kagadi District and beyond is mourning the sudden passing of Peter Kabugo, a promising FUFA referee.
Kabugo collapsed during a match between SC Villa and UPDF at Muteesa II Stadium Wankulukuku, which ended in a 5-0 victory for Villa. Tragically, he was pronounced dead on the way to Mulago Hospital on Friday.
Kabugo, aged 28, had been quickly rising through the ranks since starting his refereeing career in 2018, and he was on the shortlist for the prestigious FIFA badge.
In addition to refereeing, Kabugo was a professional Grade V teacher, known for his dedication and professionalism on and off the field. He had moved to Kagadi Town in 2017 and trained at Kagadi Secondary School, where he first embarked on his journey as a referee.
Goodyear Kirungi, chairman of the Kagadi District Football Association, remembered Kabugo as a fair and devoted official. Vincent Tumuramye, a sports presenter, highlighted that Kabugo was one of the youngest and most promising referees in Uganda, with the potential to officiate at the PAMOJA AFCON 2027, set to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Ambrose Kagango, a teammate and member of the Kagadi District Corporates Team, praised Kabugo’s passion and dedication to sports, both as a referee and as a goalkeeper on the team.
Local leader and player Johnson Kirya recalled Kabugo as a caring, motivating presence, always encouraging his teammates. Kabugo had been scheduled to officiate a match in the Kitara Region league, demonstrating his commitment to the sport until his final moments.
Peter Kabugo will be laid to rest in his home village of Lugangu, Najja Sub County, Buikwe district on Sunday (today).
