President Museveni boosts Kyankwanzi, appoints Makombo as Assistant RDC
The deployment aims to enhance service delivery monitoring and supervision.
Kampala: President Yoweri Museveni has recently made significant changes in the administration of Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) and other officials in Uganda.
Kyankwanzi, which houses the National Leadership Institute (NALI), has seen a notable appointment.
Patrick Asiimwe Ndahura, also known as Professor Makombo-Jago Minyang, has been named the Assistant Resident Commissioner (RDC) for the vast Kyankwanzi district.
His background as an African unity lobbyist, rural community agricultural trainer, and pan-African advocate likely contributed to this appointment.
The reshuffling and appointments appear to target specific individuals. Notable figures like Mr. Kissa Kyamukama, Counsel Mufakinanye Moses (known online as Hon Omujugujugu), and Richard Job Matua (MJR), an anti-corruption advocate and Pan African Ethiopian Award winner from West Nile, have been closely watched.
The deployment aims to enhance service delivery monitoring and supervision.
Indeed, the strategic growth of Uganda across various sectors necessitates a diverse pool of talents. These individuals play a crucial role in national and international mass media mobilization, cyber broadcasts highlighting Uganda’s tourism and investment potential, and effective communication techniques within communities.
Despite his controversial past protest where he publicly exposed his behind by removing his belt, Kissa Kyamukama has since apologized and received forgiveness from the Kabaka of Buganda, the NRM community, and the broader Baganda community.
While criticism of his character may resurface due to his recent appointment, President Museveni will likely focus on his official performance in the new role and his historical ability to mobilize and counter retrogressive opposition to the NRM.
Like a character from the Book of Job, Professor Makombo Jago Minyang emerges as a less-known figure within political circles but a prominent presence in other domains.
With 48,000 followers and 300,000 views on TikTok alone, this online content creator brings a unique perspective and influence to the table.
Patrick Asiimwe Ndahura, also known as Makombo-Jago Minyang, has a fascinating background. Born in Mbale in 1983, he hails from a lineage that includes Grace Ogwal Akot of Aboke and Heridai Kiiza Katongole Ndahura of Bunyoro, Masindi.
Makombo excelled as the best-performing student at both O and A levels.
Makombo wears different online personas, each tailored to the talent he’s showcasing. His educational journey includes stints at Adyel Primary School in Lira and Nakivubo Blue.
He completed his Universal Primary Education (UPE) at KISWA Primary School in Kampala.
His path led him to Jinja College, but a violent student strike during Ogutti Bichachi’s administration prompted him to leave. In 1997, he joined St. Lawrence Citizens High School-Kabaka’s Lake Campus. There, he co-founded the “Flowering Gardening Club—FGC,” a botanical and landscaping students’ club, alongside his childhood friend Kibuuka Rogers (BOSSA UK, Trending Uganda Media).
Their natural art and design concepts have left an indelible mark on the gardens of the renowned St. Lawrence Schools and Colleges Education franchises, as well as the University in Mengo/Lubaga.
His creative journey continued with the formation of “Fantasies Entertainment.” This group, which later transformed into one of Kampala’s most famous recording girl bands, produced the impactful anti-domestic violence hit song “Onsabatula nga Ngalabi.” Makombo co-wrote this powerful track alongside Hassan Chikago (RIP), producer Ricko (Tumbiza Sound), and Patrick Kasule.
Beyond music, Makombo wears many hats. He co-founded Campus Eye, a subsidiary of Uganda’s renowned online entertainment blog, bigeye.ug, alongside Ian Ortega Aliro from Nation Media Group.
As a talent manager, he has discovered and nurtured famous artists and creative talents, including Papa Cidy, Freeboy Adams, Desire Luzinda, Eddy Kenzo, MC Kapaale, MC Mariachi, Shivan Pavin, BadMan Crusher, Shasta Pee, Kimuli “Pablo,” and Irish Kanyerezi “Kyebandula,” among others. His impact extends across various domains, making him a multifaceted force in Uganda’s creative landscape.
In April 2000, Makombo-Jago Minyang initiated a unique entertainment concept called “Kalicochi.” His motivation was to provide employment opportunities for stray street children.
The roots of this idea can be traced back to the concepts developed by Kakuru Benard and the groups “Emotions” and “Moses and the Sober Royals,” in which Makombo and his younger brother, Kasule Patrick (Manager of Fantasies Entertainment), actively participated.
However, controversy erupted in 2006 when violence escalated among rival groups competing for Kampala’s most lucrative entertainment nightspots. These venues included Park View, Hollywood-Nateete, the Chez Johnson Group of hotels, and other major urban entertainment spots like City Rock in Nansana.
The Ugandan government intervened to regulate this variety entertainment industry, which had become tainted by a new, opportunistic, and vulgar version of the same concept known as “Ekimansulo.” This trend was popularized by an actor named “Amanda and his Angels” from Butyabwa, Buliisa. Urban drinking establishments and ‘bivulu’ joints were flooded with numerous variety entertainment groups, primarily composed of teenagers, street children, and teenage mothers.
Rather than outright banning the already popular and economically viable Variety Entertainment concept, the state recognized its significance in providing employment opportunities for thousands of vulnerable Ugandan children. Adult guidance was introduced to steer these groups. Among those involved was Gen. Elly Tumwine (RIP).
Kalicochi’s simplicity as a business model contributed to its success. It required only the individual and their unique talent. The locals were captivated as local songs transformed into comedy acts, and beer companies thrived, surpassing their previous success with live bands that were once famous but had now faded into obscurity. Kalicochi became a beacon of creativity and resilience in Uganda’s entertainment landscape.
Kalicochi spread throughout Uganda, with “Makombo (Patricks) and the Fantasies” performing as far as BUGANDA Pub in GULU, Mutukula, Kigali (Rwanda), Kenya, Tanzania, and Kinshasa (Congo).
Other groups like Julius (Swangz Avenue), Nemus and the Xtiners, Alex and City Rock Entertainment, and Ronnie and the Obsessions transitioned from Western music to local dances.
The transition from Kalicochi to mainstream media began. The Obsessions released “Jangu Nkutwale,” followed by “City Rock Ent,” with several hits.
Fantasies Galz, enabled by DJ Jacob and Leyla Mutebi of Mama FM, made waves with their hit “Onsabatula nga Engalabi.”
Sheebah Karungi, who initially hustled alongside Coco Finger, was discovered by Nash Wander and supported by another comrade of Makombo, Jeff Kiwa.
The Kalicochi political battles with the live band entertainment industry led to the creation of the Uganda Performing Rights Association and the ADA (Audio Visual Distributors’ Association).
These organizations aimed to curtail copyright infringement and seek formal permission from content creators. The new generation of Ugandan teens and youth could now’mime’ their works without breaching copyright.
Early on, Makombo developed a passion for conservation. He studied environmental science at the university and joined the Ugandan Wildlife Authority.
Starting as a park warden, Makombo steadily climbed the ranks. Today, he holds the position of Chief Conservation Area Manager for all protected areas and wildlife reserves in Uganda.
His impactful work includes spearheading the protection and restoration of the mountain ecosystem and biodiversity in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. He emphasized community involvement, anti-poaching efforts, and sustainable resource management to garner local support for conservation.
Makombo’s landscape concept, implemented in the Semliki Wildlife Reserve and nearby Semliki National Park, has become a model used across Uganda in multiple conservation areas.
He also played a pivotal role in changing local perceptions toward the conservation of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Beyond Uganda’s borders, Makombo served as president of a cross-border coordination committee, working to protect forests and gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Makombo’s journey extended beyond conservation. As a graduate agricultural scientist from Makerere University, he joined Finance Trust, an MDI, in 2009.
His pioneering work in agricultural lending systems enabled the MDI to attain a portfolio that eventually led to its full licensure as a commercial bank.
In 2009, Makombo transitioned to British American Tobacco (BAT) as a field agronomy and farmer mobilization technician.
By 2012, he had achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the youngest Area Manager at the same position within BAT globally.
When BAT closed due to the anti-tobacco bill, Makombo moved on to manage ESCO Uganda Ltd., a leading exporter of cocoa and vanilla.
In 2020, Makombo joined OLAM Uganda as a cocoa and coffee agronomist, rural farmer mobilizer, and agricultural certification expert.
Under his guidance, Uganda, through OLAM, which had the largest market share, exported the largest volume of certified coffee in its history.
In 2021, John Makombo made significant strides in both the apicultural industry and national community mobilization. Let’s explore his accomplishments:
As the Executive Director of Golden Bees Ltd., Makombo played a pivotal role in Uganda’s honey industry.
Under his leadership, Uganda achieved a historic milestone by exporting 7 metric tons of beeswax to Denmark for the first time.
Golden Bees boasts an impressive production and marketing database, comprising 11,500 beekeepers from all over Uganda.
Their signature products, “Bee Mine Honey” and “GBL Propolis,” continue to lead the way in apicultural production and marketing.
In 2021, Makombo joined the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) in a dual capacity: he contributed to shaping the ONC’s communication and outreach strategies, and he was Head of Investment, Skilling, and Talents Department. Here, he spearheaded transformative initiatives.
Makombo and his team created the ONC Savings and Growth App (#TOSAGA), an ONC staff SACCO that amassed a savings and loan portfolio of $48 million within just 12 months. All ONC staff successfully saved and borrowed through this innovative platform.
The National Youth Wealth Zonal App (#NYWEZA) program sourced 2,000 modern beehives for the Bazzukulu (youth) in 27 Ugandan districts. It aimed to empower young people through wealth creation and industrial training.
Makombo’s brainchild initiatives have become integral to the ONC Kyambogo’s ongoing activities, benefiting the Bazzukulu and fostering wealth and talent creation.
Makombo actively promotes the NRM party candidates and structures through digital channels.
His voluntary contributions extend to the Poverty Alleviation Department (PAD) at the Statehouse, the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, and the NRM Secretariat National Research Systems.
Additionally, he collaborates with the Mwangaza Study Group and is a key figure in the African Continental Unity Party (ACUP), Africa’s pioneering intercontinental membership political party.
Alongside Imhotep Kabala from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Makombo represents the East African Community as one of the only two global strategists and co-founders of ACUP.
The African Continental Unity Party (ACUP) is a global movement with a vision to rebuild Africa as a powerful force in the 21st century.
ACUP aims to transform this movement into a political party across all African countries, training a new generation of leaders who will lead Africa toward total liberation and reconstruction.
