Environmentalists warn of harsher climatic conditions in future

She says that if the degradation continues, Masindi will become a desert that will come with more dangerous pests and diseases.

Masindi: Environmentalists have warned of harsher climatic conditions in the future if no deliberate interventions are taken to curb the rampant environmental degradation in Masindi district.

The warning was issued by the Masindi district environment officer, Olivia Nabukenya, as Uganda joined the rest of the world in marking World Environment Day on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

The day was designated by the United Nations as World Environment Day with the aim of encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment.

The national event was held in Sironko district, while the day for Masindi will be marked on June 21 in Kimengo Sub County.

Nabukenya noted that there is rampant degradation of the environment in the district through cutting down trees for charcoal burning and agriculture, as well as encroaching on the wetlands, which has led to harsh climatic conditions like prolonged droughts, floods, and high temperatures.

She says that if the degradation continues, Masindi will become a desert that will come with more dangerous pests and diseases.

Nabukenya says that as part of the efforts to protect the environment in the district, they are going to start naming and shaming the leaders who are degrading the environment.

Micah Asiku, another environmentalist, says Uganda has a good legal and institutional framework for protecting the environment, but it is not being enforced, resulting in the rampant degradation of the environment in the country.

Asiku calls for uniform enforcement of environmental laws in order to protect the environment.

The district secretary for production, trade, and natural resources, Geoffrey Bigabwa, admits that environmental degradation is a big problem in the district, revealing that the district is partnering with organizations and institutions to restore the forests and wetlands in the district.

Bigabwa adds that the district is also promoting the planting of trees during ceremonies, among other interventions.
