Electric car manufacturing companies in Africa
With government support and further investment, Africa’s EV industry is likely to grow significantly in the coming years.
National: Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing is still emerging in Africa, but a few companies and startups are leading the way, developing and producing electric cars and other EV types tailored to local needs. Here are some of the notable EV manufacturers in Africa:
1. Kiira Motors Corporation (Uganda)
- Kiira Motors, a Ugandan company, was one of the first African automakers to develop electric and hybrid vehicles. Their lineup includes the Kiira EV Smack, an electric sedan, and the Kayoola EVS, a solar-powered electric bus aimed at public transportation.
- Kiira’s mission includes reducing urban pollution and creating sustainable transportation solutions for East Africa.
2. Opibus (Kenya)
- Based in Kenya, Opibus focuses on converting internal combustion engine vehicles into electric ones, especially for buses, motorcycles, and fleet vehicles.
- Opibus is also producing fully electric motorcycles, making it easier for couriers and transport businesses in East Africa to adopt sustainable transportation.
3. Solar Taxi (Ghana)
- Solar Taxi, a Ghanaian startup, produces electric cars, motorcycles, and bicycles tailored for the African market. They also provide solar-powered charging solutions, making electric transportation more feasible in regions with limited grid infrastructure.
- Solar Taxi focuses on affordable EVs and reducing transportation costs through energy-efficient vehicles.
4. BAIC (South Africa)
- BAIC, a Chinese car manufacturer with a plant in South Africa, produces electric vehicles in limited numbers for the South African market. It has partnered with local firms to establish production lines for EVs and plans to expand as demand for EVs increases in the country.
5. Mellowcabs (South Africa)
- Mellowcabs produces small, electric vehicles designed for short-distance urban trips. These three-wheeled EVs are affordable, sustainable, and can be charged using solar power, ideal for city commuting and ridesharing in South Africa.
6. Tesla (Service and Infrastructure in South Africa)
- Although Tesla does not manufacture in Africa, it has a presence in South Africa through charging infrastructure and service support. Tesla has made initial steps toward supporting EV adoption in South Africa, but full-scale manufacturing is not yet available on the continent.
7. Electric Tuk Tuk (Ethiopia)
- Electric Tuk Tuk, an Ethiopian company, focuses on electrifying traditional three-wheeled vehicles used for short commutes. By retrofitting popular tuk-tuks with electric drivetrains, the company helps to reduce emissions and fuel dependency in urban areas.
8. Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) (Nigeria)
- Nigeria’s Innoson is a prominent local automotive company, and while not yet a major EV manufacturer, it has announced plans to produce electric cars in the near future. Innoson aims to cater to the local market with affordable, locally-produced EVs.
9. ACE Green Mobility (Egypt)
- ACE Green Mobility is an Egyptian startup focused on electric mobility solutions for urban transportation. The company’s goal is to bring electric mobility to Egypt’s bustling urban centers, focusing on affordability and ease of use.
10. Ayeeco Electric Bikes (Rwanda)
- Ayeeco manufactures electric bikes designed for the Rwandan market, focusing on urban and suburban commuters. The electric bike model is affordable and addresses the growing demand for clean, low-cost transportation in Kigali and other cities.
These companies are advancing Africa’s transition toward electric mobility, often focusing on unique challenges, like unreliable electricity grids and high fuel prices, by integrating renewable energy solutions and affordable EVs. With government support and further investment, Africa’s EV industry is likely to grow significantly in the coming years.
