Domestic violence affecting children’s education in Buliisa

A survey conducted by our reporter towards the end of the second academic term showed that most schools in Butiaba Sub County had low enrolment of learners.

Buliisa: The Buliisa District Community Development Officer, Mr. Benard Barugahara, is blaming continuous domestic violence in families for the high rate of school dropouts amongst learners.

In an exclusive interview with this news portal, Barugahara stressed that every month his office registers about 7 to 10 cases of domestic violence, noting that some cases go unreported.

‘’Domestic violence in families has been attributed to increased cases of school dropouts.’’

According to Barugahara, domestic violence is seen as a major cause of the high rate of school dropouts amongst learners in most families. He therefore advised couples to desist from domestic violence and rather seek other alternative ways of solving their misunderstanding.

A survey conducted by our reporter towards the end of the second academic term showed that most schools in Butiaba Sub County had low enrolment of learners.

However, aside from domestic violence, this was also attributed to restricted fishing gear and methods on Lake Albert. According to authorities, due to the ban on the hurry-up method for silver fishing, most parents can’t afford the recommended fishing gear and thus lack school fees for their children.

Data collected at Walukuba Primary School formerly had 1450 pupils, but by the end of the term, they had only 600 pupils. At Nyamukuta Primary School, out of over 800 pupils, only 300 will be at school by the end of the term.

Furthermore, at Bugoigo primary school, out of 1,000 pupils, only 800 ended the second term. Meanwhile, at Butiaba Seed Secondary School, out of over 350 students, 330 are at school.

Mr. Obegiu Charles, the deputy academic at Walukuba Primary School, blamed the low enrolment on restricted fishing gear, saying that most of the parents say their source of income has been tempered.

He further disclosed that there is also continuous absenteeism and escape from school since most children complain of having slept angry.

The head teacher of Butiaba Seed Secondary School,  Mr. Samuel Muponda, told ugreports.co.ug that some parents are now failing to support their children with scholastics since they don’t have any source of income.

The Butiaba sub-county LC3 chairperson, Mr. Abdala Opio, noted that the situation is alarming since most of the parents are fishermen and rely on silver fish.

Meanwhile, the Buliisa District Community Development Officer, DCDO, Mr. Benard Barugahara Atwooki, has asked for teamwork among couples if they are to develop.

According to Barugahara, some married men tend to hide their finances from their wives, emphasizing that this practice hinders development at home.

‘’There are some married men who have the tendency of hiding their money earned from their wives; such a habit brings about retardation of development in most homes.’’

He advises that for a developed home, there should be trust and exposure of finances to each other for clear home budgeting.
