Details Emerge: Why police officer shot suspect dead in Masindi
The deceased had allegedly punished his son, leading his wife to report the matter to the police.
Masindi: Police in Masindi district are hunting for their colleague who shot a suspect dead.
The incident happened in the Kinenabuhere trading center in Kitamba Parish, Bwijanga Sub County, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at around 10 p.m.
Police have identified the deceased as Asiimwe Ronald, 30 years old, and the suspect as PC Ssenono Euginea No. 53470.
The deceased was a resident of Kinenabwa village in Kitamba Parish, while the suspect is attached to the Bwijanga police post.
William Mbabazi, the father of the deceased, stressed that he heard gunshots and rushed to the scene. He was devastated to find his son’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood.
Mbabazi is urging the government to apprehend the police officer responsible for his son’s death.
Nicholas Balinda, the Defense LC2 Chairperson for Kitamba Parish, told this news portal that the incident stemmed from domestic violence.
The deceased had allegedly punished his son, leading his wife to report the matter to the police.
Despite efforts to resolve the issue at the LC1 level, the wife insisted on pressing charges, resulting in the assault case being registered at the Bwijanga police post.
The deceased, Asiimwe Ronald, attempted to escape when he realized the police wanted to arrest him.
According to Balinda, the police officer pursued him (the deceased), firing six live bullets during the chase. Ultimately, the officer shot Asiimwe in the back, resulting in his death.
Musinguzi Wilson, a crime preventer, has been arrested in connection with the incident, and he is currently detained at Masindi Central Police Station.
However, the police officer responsible for the fatal shooting fled the scene.
Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, assured the community that efforts are underway to apprehend the police officer.
Emmy Ngabirano, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Masindi, expressed regret over the incident and extended condolences to the deceased’s family.
Ngabirano said that the gun has been recovered and emphasized that moving forward civilians should not be arrested at night.
