Kampala: News of the alleged passing of Kawempe North MP, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, has spread like wildfire this morning.
Reports initially indicated that the legislator had passed away in the ICU at Lubaga Hospital, but further clarifications from hospital authorities and political leaders suggest that Ssegirinya has not yet been officially declared dead.
According to Speaker Anita Annet Among and Dr. Sister Grace, the Acting Executive Director of Lubaga Hospital, Ssegirinya is currently brain dead but has not been pronounced legally dead by doctors.
Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, formerly a Kawempe Lord Councillor, has been battling serious health issues since his release from Kigo Prison. His condition has seen him in and out of hospitals across Uganda, Kenya, and the Netherlands for specialized treatment.
This morning, social media platforms were flooded with condolence messages and tributes following initial reports of Ssegirinya’s death. However, fresh statements from National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, clarified that while Ssegirinya is brain dead, he has not been officially declared deceased.
Bobi Wine provided more details on the situation, stating that Ssegirinya’s mother had misunderstood the medical condition and prematurely announced her son’s death.
“CLARIFICATION: According to the doctors, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya is brain dead. Most of his vital organs have shut down, but he has not yet been declared dead. When his mother was informed of his condition, she immediately announced his passing. Our teams are on the ground monitoring the situation, as we all PRAY FOR A MIRACLE,” Kyagulanyi wrote on his social media platforms.
What Does Brain Death Mean?
Medical experts explain that brain death refers to the complete and irreversible cessation of all brain activity, including the brain stem. Once a person is brain dead, they are legally and clinically considered dead, with no possibility of recovery. Individuals in this state cannot breathe independently or regain consciousness.
Despite this grim prognosis, Ssegirinya’s supporters, family, and political allies are holding onto hope for a miracle.
The MP and his colleague, Hon. Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye West), were detained for over a year on murder charges linked to the infamous Masaka Sub-Region attacks, which claimed over 20 lives.
Both MPs were released on bail in February 2023, but Ssegirinya’s health has deteriorated significantly since his time in prison.
