Cultural Institutions urged to embrace alternative dispute resolution

He emphasized the importance of preserving unity within cultural institutions by handling matters internally through traditional and culturally accepted practices.

Mbale: The Deputy Chief Justice of Uganda, His Lordship Dr. Flavian Zeija, has called on cultural institutions across the country to utilize Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms to settle internal conflicts, instead of rushing to the courts.

His Lordship made the remarks today while officially opening a Court of Appeal session in Mbale City, as part of the ongoing regional rollout of circuit courts of appeal.

The new initiative aims to decentralize the Court of Appeal’s services, bringing justice closer to the people in Bugisu, Gulu, Mbarara, and other selected regions.

“Disputes within cultural institutions are better resolved amicably through dialogue, mediation, and other traditional mechanisms. Courts should be a last resort,” said Dr. Zeija.

At the same event, Mr. Steven Masiga, spokesperson of the Bamasaaba Cultural Institution (Inzu Ya Masaba), welcomed the Deputy Chief Justice’s advice, describing it as timely and constructive.

“I salute you, My Lord, the Hon. Deputy Chief Justice, for this wise counsel. I will amplify this message through our Bukuka media platforms and brief the Umukuka III and our clan chairpersons on your guidance,” Masiga said.
