Construction of Hoima Stadium commences this month

The $130 million project is expected to be completed within 18 months, aiming for readiness by December 2025.

Masindi: The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) President, Eng. Moses Magogo Hassim, has disclosed that the construction of Hoima Stadium will commence this month.

Magogo says that the contractor is mobilizing equipment for the construction, has signed a contract with the government, and that the project will take sixteen months.

‘’I’m informed that the contractor is mobilizing equipment for the construction, has already signed a contract with the government, and the project will take eighteen months.’’

‘’If the stadium is completed within the stipulated period of time, there is no reason why the country will fail to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON),’’ he further added.

The FUFA president added that the stadium in Hoima will come with four training facilities, which include Masindi Stadium, and these will also be used after AFCON to host the Uganda Premier League games, among others.

Magogo was addressing journalists on Monday, July 1, 2024, after a meeting with regional football coaches, managers, and directors hosted by the excom member Byamukama Rogers in Bigando Cell Masindi Municipality.

He also advised the people of Bunyoro to prepare and tap into this opportunity, mostly in the sectors of transport, accommodation, and hospitality, since there will be many guests in the region.

Rogers Byamukama, the Bunyoro Excom Member at the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), also echoes the need for the people of Bunyoro to be prepared to tap into the opportunities during the AFCON.

‘’AFCON shouldn’t leave us the same; let’s prepare ourselves and tap into this opportunity. We can turn our small houses into hosts for people who will have come to watch AFCON, start businesses, and others.’’

Hoima Stadium is expected to be used for the first time during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations soccer tournament.

The stadium will be one of the three venues that Uganda plans to use during the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The stadium will be situated in Mparo Division, within the city of Hoima, in the Bunyoro sub-region of the Western Region of Uganda.

The stadium will occupy a total of 34.9 acres. 10 acres were donated by the estate of the late Dr. Rujumba, and another 10 acres were sold to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) by the same estate. The remaining 14.9 acres were acquired by the Uganda National Council of Sports.

The proposed seating capacity of the stadium is 20,000. While primarily intended for soccer matches, the stadium will also accommodate other sports, including athletics.

The Government of Uganda has signed a contract with M/S SUMMA, a Turkish company, for the construction of a 20,000-seater multi-purpose stadium in Hoima.

This stadium is one of the venues planned to host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.

The $130 million project is expected to be completed within 18 months, aiming for readiness by December 2025.
