Chope gears up for 3rd edition of Mwaaru festival
“We shall showcase Paluo traditional foods, dances such as Opere, Unde and Bwera, traditional games and sports, dressing styles, as well as performances from Paluo musical artists,” Mr. Kisembo said.

Kiryandongo: The newly instituted Paluo (Chope) cultural institution is in high gear preparing for the third edition of its annual cultural festival, Mwaaru, slated for 5th February at Reri Hills ceremonial grounds in Nyawino, Kiryandongo District.
Held under the theme “My Culture, My Identity,” the festival aims to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Paluo (Chope) people of Greater Kibanda. Organisers expect the event to attract over 5,000 revellers from Kiryandongo, Masindi, and other parts of the country.
Addressing journalists at the cultural institution’s headquarters in Katulikire Trading Centre, Kichwabugingo Sub-county, the Speaker of the institution, Mr. Damot Tela Adyeri, said the festival is intended to educate the younger generation on how culture is observed, upheld, and respected.
The Minister of Culture, Mrs. Amina Ahoo Akiiki, described Mwaaru as a vital platform for showcasing what Kibanda (Chope) has to offer the world culturally and traditionally.
On his part, the Prime Minister of Paluo (Chope) Tekwaro, Mr. Kisembo Denis Ochola Ateenyi Musiita, noted that the annual festival held every 5th February is an essential forum for uniting the people of Greater Kibanda to celebrate their unique identity.
“We shall showcase Paluo traditional foods, dances such as Opere, Unde and Bwera, traditional games and sports, dressing styles, as well as performances from Paluo musical artists,” Mr. Kisembo said.
He called upon residents of Kiryandongo, Masindi, and neighbouring districts, as well as invited guests, to attend the event in large numbers.
The Mwaaru Festival is a major cultural gathering that brings together the Paluo (Chope) communities from Kiryandongo, Masindi, and beyond at Reri ceremonial grounds in Nyawino every year to celebrate the Paluo language, customs, and traditions including the famous pet names locally known as “Nying Paak.”
