Child hospitalized after Chimpanzee attack in Hoima

Ganjana appealed to the government and well-wishers to support efforts to save his child’s life as she receives treatment.

Hoima: A one-year-old girl identified only as Promise has been admitted to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital after she was attacked and critically injured by a chimpanzee in Hoima District.

The incident occurred on Friday morning in Kidukuru Village, Dwoli Parish, Kitoba Town Council.

According to the child’s father, Richard Ganjana, the chimpanzee attacked Promise while she was in the garden with her parents. He said the animal inflicted severe injuries to the child’s stomach, broke one of her legs, and cut off one of her fingers.

Ganjana appealed to the government and well-wishers to support efforts to save his child’s life as she receives treatment.

Edward Barongo, the LC1 Chairperson of Kidukuru Village, confirmed the incident and called for urgent government intervention to address the growing cases of human–wildlife conflict in the area.

Barongo urged authorities to take action by relocating chimpanzees roaming in communities to protected and gazetted conservation areas.

Residents say chimpanzee attacks have been on the rise in Hoima City, Hoima District, and Kagadi District in recent years.

On September 25, 2024, a chimpanzee reportedly attacked and mauled a three-and-a-half-year-old child in Bubaale Cell in Hoima City West Division.

A day earlier, on September 24, 2024, another chimpanzee attacked and injured Julius Kansiime in Kikinga Village, Nyarugabu Parish, Bugambe Sub-county.

In another case on December 3, 2021, a chimpanzee attacked and injured a five-year-old boy, John Alinaitwe, in Mparangasi Village.

Local leaders are now urging government agencies responsible for wildlife management to take urgent measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of communities living near wildlife habitats.
