Bunyoro voters urged to elect leaders who represent people’s voices

He also contested for the Hoima Municipality parliamentary seat on the FDC ticket during the 2016 general elections.

Hoima: The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has called on voters in the Bunyoro region to elect leaders who are capable of speaking out on the real issues affecting ordinary citizens.

Speaker Among made the remarks Monday afternoon during the burial ceremony of Patrick Jolly Baguma, the father of her son, held at Katasiha Main Cell in Hoima City.

In a firm tone, she also warned that Joseph Kutegeka, the NRM registrar for Hoima District, would face legal consequences for allegedly declaring multiple winners during the party’s primary elections. “This kind of behavior undermines democracy and the credibility of our party processes,” she stated.

During the ceremony, Speaker Among made a UGX 50 million donation to St. John’s Katasiha Church of Uganda to assist in purchasing a vehicle for the reverend. She also delivered UGX 10 million from President Yoweri Museveni to the family of the late Baguma and the Babiito clan.

Former presidential candidate and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) president Gen. Mugisha Muntu also addressed mourners, encouraging them to choose leaders based on truth and integrity rather than money. “Money may blind you for a while, but truth sustains communities,” he said.

Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Nathan Kyamanywa condemned corruption within party structures, saying that both those who offered and those who accepted bribes including those who influenced the NRM registrar should be held equally accountable.

Rt. Rev. Samuel Kahuma, Bishop Emeritus of the Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese, expressed concern over reports of torture and inhumane treatment in Uganda’s political climate, urging restraint and compassion in leadership.

The Very Reverend Capt. Eric Twine, Dean of St. Peter’s Cathedral and the officiant at the burial, used the platform to call on men to return to church and reclaim their roles in spiritual and community leadership.

Remembering Baguma

Patrick Jolly Baguma, who passed away at the age of 59 in a road accident in Kampala on Friday, was honored for his contributions to public life. A clan message read by Daniel Murungi confirmed that Baguma is survived by his wives and children.

Murungi also praised the family of the late Ramuje, to which Baguma belonged, for their unity and cooperation, urging them to continue with the same spirit going forward.

Baguma served as Deputy President of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) for Western Uganda from 2015 to 2021. He also contested for the Hoima Municipality parliamentary seat on the FDC ticket during the 2016 general elections.

The burial ceremony was attended by over 1,000 mourners, including members of parliament, LC5 chairpersons, political party representatives, aspiring candidates, and members of the wider community, all of whom gathered to pay their final respects.
