Buliisa residents urged to co-exist with stray aquatic animals

This alarming situation has also endangered children, particularly around Butiaba Primary School.

Buliisa: In Buliisa, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is urging residents living near Lake Albert to coexist peacefully with stray hippos and crocodiles that have ventured into their neighborhoods due to rising water levels.

The UWA Public Relations Officer Bashir Hangi highlighted the dangers posed by these animals, which have created fear among locals, especially as over 1,000 homes have been submerged, forcing many to seek shelter in safer locations.

Affected communities, including Magali, Kawaibanda, and Butiaba, have seen a rise in attacks on domestic animals, leading to injuries and fatalities.

This alarming situation has also endangered children, particularly around Butiaba Primary School, prompting parents to keep their children home to avoid potential attacks.

With reports of ten deaths from hippo and crocodile encounters in recent years, UWA emphasizes the importance of avoiding provocation of these wildlife species to reduce risks and foster a safer coexistence.
