Buliisa: Residents of Busingiro Parish, Biiso Sub County, Buliisa district are irked over the poor state of roads in their area.

They are raising concern over the delay and failure by the district to rehabilitate their feeder roads, stating that it is retarding development and making movement very difficult.

William Olwoch, a resident in Kijura village, Busingiro parish, says last year they were promised that the roads would be rehabilitated, noting that several culverts have broken with swamps bursting their banks.

‘’Last year, they promised us that the roads in our area would be rehabilitated; most culverts have broken due to the swamps that burst their banks.’’

Manuel Uwonda, a resident of Udukuru village, is wondering why up until now there has been nothing done, yet they were told that once the rain reduced, they would be rehabilitated.

Byensi Richard and Jane Friday, residents of Kayanja and Udukuru, respectively, asked leaders to intervene before schools reopen for the first term since most of the roads in the parish are in poor condition.

Friday stressed that women are finding it difficult to go to health facilities, transport their agricultural products to markets, and also transact with other businesses.

When contacted, Biiso Sub County Chairperson Mr. Denis Oyewa asked the district leadership to intervene and rehabilitate the roads before the rainy season.

‘’They are right to complain; the district pledged to rehabilitate roads during the dry season, but up until now they haven’t done anything. Are they waiting for the rainy season?” he wondered.

Mr. Oyewa stressed that he has several times visited the engineer`s office on the matter, but nothing has yielded fruit yet, and the roads are in a poor state.

We would not have gotten a comment from the Buliisa district engineer, Maurice Wakame, by the time of publication since his known phone number was unavailable.

Last year, the district engineer disclosed that the district has over 1.06 billion shillings for road rehabilitation, which is funded by the Ministry of Works and Transport Rehabilitation Grant and the Uganda Road Fund.
