Buliisa farmers urged to embrace modern farming methods to boost income
He further encouraged the beneficiaries to manage the milling machine sustainably through regular maintenance to ensure its long-term operation.
Buliisa: Farmers in Buliisa District have been urged to adopt modern farming methods to increase their productivity and household income.
The call was made by Swithern Tumwine, the Executive Director of Living Earth Uganda, during the handover of a milling machine to farmers in Kasinyi Village.
Tumwine explained that farmers, particularly those affected by the project, have been trained in improved agronomic practices aimed at enhancing their yields and income. He revealed that 110 farmers also received improved goat and cattle breeds to boost livestock production.
In addition, farmers were trained in post-harvest handling to minimize losses and maximize profits. Tumwine advised them to process cassava into flour rather than storing it in gardens after harvest.
“Keeping cassava in flour form allows farmers to free up land for more planting seasons, which improves food security and increases business opportunities,” he said, adding that selling cassava flour is more profitable than selling raw cassava.
He further encouraged the beneficiaries to manage the milling machine sustainably through regular maintenance to ensure its long-term operation.
The milling machine in Kasinyi was constructed for project-affected persons under Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) 1. Tumwine noted that beneficiaries under RAP 2 to 5 also received a similar milling machine located in Ngwedo Town.
Meanwhile, Kennedy Oringi, the LC3 Chairperson of Ngwedo Sub-county, commended TotalEnergies for supporting the community through various initiatives.
Oringi said many youths have secured employment in the Oil and Gas sector, which has also contributed to a reduction in crime within the villages.
He added that the new milling machine is strategically located, since Ngwedo Sub-county serves as the food basket for many families in Buliisa District.
