Bukedea vendors operate in darkness

Bukedea: Vendors in Bukedea town council in Bukedea district have been forced to operate night business in darkness due to a lack of street security lights.
In August 2019, Bukedea town council authorities procured solar street lights worth 12 million shillings.
The solar street lights were installed, but all are not functioning.
According to vendors, a lack of security lights puts their businesses at high risk, especially in terms of food security.
Emmanuel Odeke, one of the chapati makers, told this website that they are now resorting to hiring torches as sources of light in order to ensure the safety of their food and customers.
“Some customers come with different intentions, so with fear of food poisoning, we have to hire torches as a source of light,” said Mr. Odeke.
Mr. Patrick Onyoin Edait, the chairperson of Bukedea town council market vendors, said this morning, June 12, 2024, that over time they have tabled their grievances with the responsible authorities, but no positive response has been realized.
“Whenever we complain and report our issue to the town council, they always tell us to wait until now, nothing is happening,” said Mr. Edait.
However, Mr. Sam Engole, the Bukedea town council LCIII chairperson, when reached for comment, says the installation of the street security lights contract was awarded to Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) contractors.
“We agreed as the council to award the street light contract to UNRA, and soon they are going to fix the light,” said Engole.
