Bukedea PDM SACCO chairperson, vice arrested over extortion
“We opened a general inquiry file and are only seeking more guidance from state Antony," said Asiimwe.
Bukedea: Two chairpersons for the Parish Development Model (PDM) SACCO of Kamutur Parish and Kocus Parish in Kamutur Sub County in Bukedea district have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from the PDM beneficiaries.
The duo, identified as John Michael Orukotum, SACCO chairperson, and the vice chairperson, Omuna Kocus, were arrested on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
It’s alleged that the victims ask the beneficiaries to pay a sum of 10,000 to 50,000 shillings in order to benefit from the program.
Mr. Moses Godfrey Otim, the Bukedea district PDM focal point person, told this publication that the PDM guidelines stipulate that no beneficiary should pay money in order to benefit; it is free of charge.
“We received reports from the people that they have been charged to pay money in order to benefit. My office and RDC converged on a community meeting where we were able to receive more complaints from the PDM beneficiaries,” said Mr. Otim.
Mr. William Wilberforce Tukei, the Bukedea resident district commissioner, said his office is set to ensure that the PDM program is not diverted by selfish people.
He said the program aims to benefit people freely without charging any money.
“These people should be charged with sabotaging a government program,” said RDC Tukei.
Mr. Richard Asiimwe, the Bukedea District Police Commander, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday July 3, 2024, saying the two are pending to be dragged to court.
“We opened a general inquiry file and are only seeking more guidance from state Antony,” said Asiimwe.
