Bukedea government school abandon as waterlogging submerges trees used as classrooms

“We have only two dilapidated classroom blocks that were abandoned years back, and pupils have been studying under trees,” he added.

Bukedea: Learning has been suspended at Tajar Primary School in Kamutur Sub County, Bukedea District, after severe waterlogging submerged the trees under which pupils have been studying.

A survey conducted on 18 November 2025 found the school completely abandoned, with the compound serving as a breeding ground for insects and a grazing area for cattle. By midday, not a single teacher was present at the school.

According to Rojas Nabulangu, the Tajar area councillor, no teacher has resumed teaching since the term began. “This school is no longer operating and it has been left for rearing cattle, yet it is a government school,” Nabulangu said.

He added that pupils have no learning space because the trees they normally use as makeshift classrooms are submerged due to persistent waterlogging.

“We have only two dilapidated classroom blocks that were abandoned years back, and pupils have been studying under trees,” he added.

Jackson Ojekede, the Kamutur Sub County Chairperson, attributed the flooding to works carried out by Dott Services Company under the Acomai Irrigation Scheme.

“This school was safe, but when the channels from the Acomai Irrigation Scheme were created, the water level overpowered the drains, causing water to pour into the school premises,” Ojekede explained.

He noted that the concern has repeatedly been raised with Dott Services, but no action has been taken.

Bukedea District Education Officer (DEO) Stephen Okurut said the district has plans to construct new facilities for the school in the 2026/27 financial year.

“Tajar is one of the schools planned for construction in the financial year 2026–27, and I hope this will offer a long-lasting solution for the people of Tajar,” Okurut stated.

As parliamentary candidates campaign for votes, David Beecham Okwere, the NRM flag bearer, visited Tajar and pledged to construct a water channel to divert floodwater away from the school.
