Jinja: A 29-year-old boda boda rider from Magamaga Town Council, Mayuge District, has been arrested and detained at CPS Kakira on suspicion of raping a 25-year-old female passenger.
The suspect, identified as Michael Acidri (commonly known as Azabo), allegedly committed the crime on January 12 at around 11 PM.
The victim had hired the rider for a motorcycle journey from Magamaga to Bugembe, Jinja City, at an agreed fare of three thousand shillings. However, upon reaching Kakira Roundabout, known for fish sales, the rider deviated from the route and drove into a swampy area off the road.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the victim screamed for help and grabbed the rider’s jacket. After they both fell off the motorcycle, the suspect reportedly dragged the victim into the swamp and sexually assaulted her.
Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, SP James Mubi, confirmed that officers on patrol using the Integrated Highway Patrol vehicle, along with security personnel from Industrial Security Services (ISS) of Madhivan, apprehended the suspect while the victim was rescued.
The victim is currently receiving medical care, while the suspect has been medically examined and is deemed of sound mind.
In response to this incident, under the leadership of RPC Kiira, SSP Charles Nsaba, and the boda boda industry leadership in Jinja, a series of refresher training courses will be organized for all boda boda riders.
The training aims to reinforce safety and security for customers and riders, focusing on customer service, road safety, self-discipline, and the dangers of engaging in criminal acts such as rape, defilement, and robberies. Topics will also include human rights, operational conduct, and socio-economic transformation.
SP Mubi emphasized that Kiira Regional Police is committed to combating sexual and gender-based violence against women and children.
Additionally, according to Kiira’s annual policing plan for 2025, efforts will intensify to combat domestic violence and child abuse. Addressing domestic violence is considered an effective way to resolve about 70% of child abuse cases.
