BHIC to Present at Global Community Conference on Commons
Kiiza decried the shrinking size of communal land as a result of oil and gas discovery, as well as the land rush which is changing the land use pattern in Buliisa.

Buliisa: Bugungu Heritage and Information Centre (BHIC) will participate in the fourth edition of the Community Conference on Commons which will be celebrated during the World Commons Week from 10-12 December 2025.
The Community Conference on Commons is an evolving platform for community members around the world actively protecting and conserving the commons at the forefront to engage with each other’s experiences and share their stories in their own voices.
This virtual conference is organised as part of the Promise of Commons Initiate that brings together various actors working on the Commons in India.
According to Kiiza Wilson, the Executive Director of BHIC, participating in this conference is a big milestone and that the commons are key in ensuring that every member of the community has access to resources such as water and land.
Kiiza argues that these commons, which are a thread to our collective life, are more than ever, threatened by the climate crisis, development and the impact of human activities on the environment.
He underscores that the customary land tenure system in Buliisa ensures that there is community land where members can have access to grazing land, building materials, fishing grounds, wild fruits, hunting grounds and sacred sites.
However, Kiiza decried the shrinking size of communal land as a result of oil and gas discovery, as well as the land rush which is changing the land use pattern in Buliisa.
