Archbishop Wokorach mobilizes funds for Devine Mercy Church construction

The project, now at the roofing stage, requires an additional UGX 360 million to be completed.

Zombo: The Archbishop of Gulu Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace Raphael P’mony Wokorach, has called on believers to contribute generously to the construction of the expansive Devine Mercy Church, formerly Christ the King Church, in Paidha Catholic Parish, Nebbi Catholic Diocese.

Addressing a crowd during the official launch of the fundraising campaign on November 19, 2024, at the Mayor’s Garden in Paidha Town Council, the Archbishop commended the community’s efforts in advancing the construction to the roofing level.

Archbishop Wokorach emphasized the spiritual and communal significance of the project, urging believers to dig deep into their pockets despite the challenging economic environment. He highlighted the declining donor support due to global crises, stressing that self-reliance was crucial for completing the project.

“Churches are more than places of worship; they provide essential services to communities. This church will not only house thousands of believers but also contribute to the spiritual and social development of Paidha,” the Archbishop stated.

The fundraising event attracted a diverse group of leaders and believers, who demonstrated their commitment by contributing monetary and material support. Local leaders like MP Gabriel Okumu, represented by his campaign manager Tito Ocamgiu, donated UGX 10 million in cash, while aspiring Woman MP for Zombo, Elizabeth Nega, pledged UGX 500,000.

Community members, including youth leader Amos Jacan and Alur Kingdom’s Director of Youth and Sports Sam Kumakech, rallied for unity across political, tribal, and religious lines to complete the “house of the Lord.”

Originally established in the early 2000s, the church was relocated to Alengukuma Cell to accommodate the growing Catholic population in Paidha Town Council. The Archbishop renamed it Devine Mercy Church to avoid duplicating names within the diocese, which had caused confusion in the past.

The project, now at the roofing stage, requires an additional UGX 360 million to be completed, as revealed by the construction committee. Over UGX 20 million was raised during the event, with many attendees making pledges to support the cause.

In addition to fundraising, Archbishop Wokorach administered the sacrament of Holy Baptism to over 700 children, marking a significant spiritual milestone for the community.

The Archbishop concluded by expressing optimism about the church’s impact, urging believers to maintain their unwavering faith and commitment to the project.
