Election of Kugonza as Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese Excites Christians
The search for a new bishop for Masindi Kitara Diocese began in October 2024 as Bishop Kasangaki’s retirement approached.

Masindi: The Christians of Masindi-Kitara Diocese are filled with joy and anticipation following the election of Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza as the 3rd Bishop of the Diocese.
The election was confirmed by the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda on Saturday, March 30, 2025.
Rev. Kugonza, who currently serves as the Diocesan Secretary, will succeed Bishop George William Kasangaki, who is set to retire on August 3, 2025, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
Milton Mirimo, the chairperson of the laity in the diocese, expressed gratitude to God for the smooth and peaceful process that led to Rev. Kugonza’s election.
Mirimo is confident that Rev. Kugonza, with his extensive experience, is well-equipped to lead the diocese into the future.
Similarly, Earnest Kiiza, the chairperson of the laity in Masindi deanery, welcomed the election and praised Rev. Kugonza’s integrity and leadership, citing his social nature and experience in church leadership as key strengths.
ASP Solomon Muigisa also voiced his support, believing that Rev. Kugonza’s vast experience would enable him to lead the diocese effectively and with wisdom.
Rev. Kugonza’s election and background
Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza was elected as the new Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese during a House of Bishops meeting held at Zebra Hotel in Masaka City on March 30, 2025.
He is scheduled to be consecrated and enthroned as Bishop on August 3, 2025, at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Masindi.
Born on October 7, 1976, in Kiryandongo District, Rev. Kugonza gave his life to Christ on September 13, 1989, at Alwala Church of Uganda in Apac District, part of the West Lango Diocese.
His journey in ministry began with his ordination as a Deacon on January 3, 2010, followed by his Priesting on December 14, 2010, at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Masindi. He was later elevated to the office of Canon.
Rev. Kugonza is married to Mrs. Proscovia Allen Kugonza, and they are blessed with four children. His career has included roles such as Parish Priest, Project Officer with Samaritan’s Purse, Headteacher, and Teacher at Kigumba Intensive Primary School. Since 2021, he has served as the Diocesan Secretary of Masindi Kitara Diocese.
Educationally, Rev. Kugonza holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity from Uganda Christian University, as well as a Diploma in Education from National Teachers College, Ngetta in Lira District, and several other professional qualifications.
The succession process
The search for a new bishop for Masindi Kitara Diocese began in October 2024 as Bishop Kasangaki’s retirement approached.
A 15-member nomination committee, chaired by Diocesan Chancellor George Kunihira, was tasked with selecting suitable candidates.
After a thorough vetting process, Rev. Kugonza emerged as the chosen leader to guide the diocese in the next chapter of its ministry.
The election of Rev. Kugonza has sparked excitement and hope among the Christians in the diocese, who look forward to his leadership and vision for the future.
