Alur King calls for peaceful and transparent elections

“Dialogue and non-violence must be the guiding principles,” he said, “as we work together to secure a harmonious electoral process.”

Zombo: As Uganda’s political parties prepare for their primaries, the Ubimu of Alur, His Royal Majesty Philip Olarker Rauni III, has appealed for a peaceful, inclusive, fair, and transparent electoral process.

The call comes ahead of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary elections scheduled for July 17, where voters will select party flag bearers for upcoming parliamentary, district, and mayoral races.

The monarch’s message follows a disturbing incident in Zombo District in which Patricia Munguryek, a nurse and resident of Zingili Cell, was attacked with bows and arrows by unidentified assailants on the night of Tuesday, July 15. The attack, believed to be election-related, occurred in Zingili Ward, Paidha Town Council, and has heightened concerns over political violence in the region.

King Rauni III stressed that the integrity of the electoral process must be safeguarded, calling for outcomes that reflect the true will of the people, free from manipulation, intimidation, or interference by political leaders or party electoral officials.

“Let this be a process anchored in respect, fairness, and accountability,” the King urged, “so that our democratic principles as Alur people remain intact.”

He emphasized the Alur Kingdom’s enduring reputation for peace, urging all parties and supporters to uphold this value during the primaries and throughout the forthcoming general elections.

The King strongly condemned election-related violence, reminding the public of past episodes that resulted in loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property. He warned against repeating such mistakes and called for early conflict prevention and peaceful resolution of disputes.

“Dialogue and non-violence must be the guiding principles,” he said, “as we work together to secure a harmonious electoral process.”

Ubimu Rauni III urged security agencies to remain vigilant and prioritize the safety of citizens during the electoral season. He also directed Ker Alur Chiefs and cultural leaders to take an active role in guiding communities toward peaceful coexistence, emphasizing the Alur principle of “Kura Matira”, meaning peaceful coexistence.

Zombo Resident District Commissioner, Festus Ayikobua, assured the public that security agencies are well-prepared to manage the anticipated NRM primaries. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the process.

As political activity intensifies across Uganda, the Alur King’s message serves as a timely reminder of the importance of peace, justice, and unity, urging both leaders and citizens to approach the elections with maturity and responsibility.
