Kitgum: In a move aimed at enhancing education opportunities in the Acholi subregion, the headteachers of primary schools across the area have been entrusted with the important task of selecting 60 students for the first round of the Dero Kwan Bursary this year.
This announcement was made by Mr. Okumu Amos Awira, a member of the executive committee of the Dero Kwan Initiative under the Gure Me Pongdwongo’s Roco Paco, during a statement recently.
Awira confirmed that headteachers from the eight districts of Acholi, along with Gulu City and Kitgum Municipality, are undergoing training to understand the selection criteria for the bursary.
As part of the initiative, each of the eight districts in the Acholi subregion will have seven students selected for the bursary, while Gulu City and Kitgum Municipality will each have two students chosen.
The bursary program will focus on students’ academic performance from Primary Five upwards, involvement in co-curricular activities, and commitment to academics.
To qualify, students must have a grade of either first or second, and they should have attended a primary school within the Acholi subregion. The level of parental support for the students’ educational endeavors will also be considered.
The 60 students selected will be supported to attend secondary schools within the Acholi subregion, marking the start of the bursary program’s pilot phase in 2025.
During the second edition of Gure Me Pongdwongo, held at the Restore Leadership Academy in Amuru district, the leadership of the initiative expressed its ambition to generate over 2.5 billion Ugandan shillings annually to support education in the region.
The initiative has already raised more than 300 million shillings from well-wishers to kick-start the program, with notable leadership from co-chairs Chief Justice His Lordship Alfonse Owiny-Dollo Chigamoi and Ambassador Dr. Olara Otunnu.
