Lamwo commissions two classroom blocks worth Shs430 million
The school now serves a population of 2,382 learners, underscoring the pressing need for additional resources to improve the learning environment.
Lamwo: Two newly constructed classroom blocks, each comprising three classrooms, have been officially commissioned at Bright Future Nursery and Primary School in Block 1, Zone 8, Palabek Refugee Settlement, Lamwo District.
The Shs430 million project aims to alleviate the growing demand for educational facilities in the area. The two blocks, providing a total of six classrooms, were funded by Charloner Children’s Charity Canada and constructed by the charity organization Street Child.
During the commissioning ceremony, Lamwo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Komakech William, expressed gratitude for the new structures but noted the persistent challenge of overcrowding.
“The classrooms are a significant improvement, but the student-to-classroom ratio is far from ideal. While the standard recommendation is 60-70 learners per classroom, these new classrooms will likely accommodate as many as 114 students each,” Mr. Komakech remarked.
He added that the new blocks are equipped with lightning arresters, ensuring the safety of the learners.
The commissioning was officiated by Hon. Dr. Aber Lillian, Kitgum District Woman MP and State Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees. She commended the efforts of Street Child in addressing infrastructure challenges in Palabek Refugee Settlement, where the majority of learners are refugees.
Dr. Aber acknowledged the strain on resources caused by the high number of students and insufficient teaching staff, emphasizing the need for continued investment in education for both refugees and host communities.
Since 2019, Street Child has implemented various infrastructure projects at Bright Future Nursery and Primary School, including: 9 classrooms (including the newly commissioned blocks), 3 water tanks with taps for rainwater harvesting and 2 VIP latrine blocks with 10 stances in total.
