“Cases of lightning strikes are becoming more common compared to past years,” he noted.

Buliisa: Shock and grief have engulfed residents of Bugana-Kichooke Village in Buliisa Sub-county, Buliisa District, after a seven-year-old girl was struck dead by lightning.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at around 11:00 a.m. during a light rain shower. Lightning struck a grass-thatched house where nine people had taken shelter.

According to an eyewitness, Godwin Kyosaba, who is also a relative of the deceased, all the victims were rushed to Bugana Health Centre III. The young girl was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

“The incident happened during a light rain shower when the victims had taken shelter in a grass-thatched house. They were rushed to Bugana Health Centre III for treatment, but the young girl was pronounced dead on arrival,” Kyosaba said.

Kyosaba added that the house was completely burnt to ashes, and no property could be salvaged. He appealed to local leaders and well-wishers to support the affected family, which lost all its belongings.

Eight other victims, including two adults and six children, sustained burn injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the same health facility.

The deceased has been identified as a granddaughter of Alice Tindyebwa, a resident of the same village.

The LC1 Chairperson of Bugana-Kichooke Village, David Katusiime, confirmed the incident, noting that the injured victims are responding to treatment.

“It’s true the incident occurred this morning. The victims were rushed to Bugana Health Centre III, and they are responding to treatment, although one child has died,” he said on Tuesday.

Katusiime added that this is not an isolated case. Last year, lightning struck a grass-thatched house during a burial ceremony in the area, killing one mourner.

“Cases of lightning strikes are becoming more common compared to past years,” he noted.

Efforts to reach the police and health officials for further details were unsuccessful by press time, as they could not be reached for comment.
