Alur Kingdom receives over 400 vocational bursaries

Zombo: The Alur Kingdom has secured 436 bursary opportunities for its youth to pursue vocational training at Erussi Institute of Science and Technology (EISS) and Fountainhead Institute of Management and Technology.
Erussi Institute of Science and Technology, located in Padolo Parish, Erussi Sub-county, Nebbi District, has awarded 100 bursaries to the Kingdom.
According to a press release issued by Alur Kingdom’s communication officer, David Rupiny, on March 12, 2025, the courses offered at EISS include; national diploma in Crop Production and Management and national certificate in Agriculture Production and Management, Building Construction, Fashion and Garment Design
Meanwhile, Fountainhead Institute of Management and Technology, based in Lira City West Division, has offered 336 bursaries six for each of the 56 Chiefdoms that make up the Kingdom.
Courses available at Fountainhead Institute include; national higher diploma in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
Others include; national diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Animal Production and Management, Records and Information Management, Accounting and Finance, Crop Production and Management, Fashion and Garment Design, Agribusiness Management and Petroleum Logistics Management.
More courses are national certificate, Plumbing, Creative and Performing Arts, Accounting and Finance, Agricultural Production and Management, Petroleum Logistics Management, Electrical Installation and Maintenance and Records and Information Management.
The youth of Alur Kingdom are known for their entrepreneurial spirit, yet many remain unemployed. According to the World Bank, Uganda’s workforce consists of 52% self-employed individuals, 43% unpaid family workers, and an overall employment rate of 77% among those aged 15-64. However, youth unemployment stands at 5.3%.
Darius Ekwang, Principal of Erussi Institute of Science and Technology, confirmed that admission requirements align with Uganda Business and Technical Education standards.
He noted that the institution was strategically established in Erussi Sub-county to address the region’s education challenges.
“The cost of studying at Erussi Institute is moderate to encourage enrollment, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds,” Ekwang stated.
Uganda sees approximately 700,000 young people enter the job market annually, a figure expected to rise to one million between 2030 and 2040. This has created a labor market mismatch, according to the World Bank.
Alur Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Prince Lawrence Opar Angala, welcomed the bursary offers, emphasizing their role in equipping youth with skills for employment and economic transformation.
Dr. Sarah Akello, the Kingdom’s Cultural Minister of Education and Environment, urged interested applicants to contact the Kingdom promptly through the provided contacts.
“This offer comes at a crucial time as the Kingdom intensifies efforts to fight poverty, improve education, and enhance social welfare,” she stated.
The establishment of Erussi Institute of Science and Technology is seen as a major milestone for Alur land, where educational institutions remain scarce. Kingdom subjects are encouraged to seize these opportunities for personal and community transformation.
