9-year-old strangled to death, body dumped in banana plantation
One suspect was apprehended to aid in the investigation.
Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri district are investigating the death of a 9-year-old girl, a pupil at Murama Primary School in Nyakishenyi sub-county.
The victim, identified as Atusasire Mary Divine, aged 9, was a resident of Nyamabare cell, Murama parish, Nyakishenyi sub-county in Rukungiri.
Her lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, around 5 p.m.
It is suspected that she was strangled and then dumped on a banana plantation by her maternal uncle, identified as Nasasira Viani,who has a reputation for criminal activities in the area.
The deceased’s parents, Byakwija Peregirino and his wife, Ntegyerize Mary Scovia, were away from home, leaving Atusasire and other children unattended.
The parents had gone to Murama Trading Center to settle a dispute concerning a banana plantation that had been mortgaged to the Bataka group as collateral for a loan.
During the resolution of the case, Kiconco Consiranta contacted Mary Scovia, the deceased’s mother, with the devastating news of Atusasire’s murder.
Mary Scovia hurried home to verify the situation and promptly informed her husband, who then alerted the Nyakishenyi police station.
Nasasira Viani was apprehended to aid in the investigation, as he had a history of conflicts with the deceased’s mother, according to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson.
Maate confirmed the suspect’s arrest while investigations are ongoing, and the deceased’s body was transported to Rwakabengo HC III mortuary for a postmortem examination.
