50 remanded after Anti-Corruption protests in Kampala

Kampala: Nakawa and Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court had a busy Tuesday evening as suspects arrested during the walk to Parliament protests were arraigned before the courts
More than 50 people were sent to Luzira prison on charges arising from their alleged involvement in Anti Corruption protests which locked the city earlier in the day.
The protestors which were split on different files and distributed before different Magistrates at Nakawa and Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Courts were charged with various offenses amidst heavy security deployment from Uganda police. Security both armed with guns and batons were inside and out of the court premises.
They have faced two counts; common nuisance and being idle and disorderly. They appeared before the Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidhasa where they denied the charges.
Sone of those that were arraigned before the courts included, Thomas Kanzira a Medical Doctor, Faiza Salima a Journalist, Bernard Olupot a Marketer and Hamala Edgar Barlow a senior Photographer and Aljab Musinguzi a resident of Nakawa Division. They were remanded until July 30th, 2024.
Some of the accused persons appeared before the Buganda Road Court were charged before Grade One Magistrate Caroline Kyoshabire and remanded until August 5th, 2024 as investigations continue.
According to URN, they comprised students, businessmen and women, KCCA councilors, veterinary doctors, and other politicians.
Other accused persons including famous local movie actresses like Nabossa appeared before Grade One Magistrates Jalia Basajjabalaba and Sanula Nambozo and were remanded until August 6th 2024 and July 31st 2024.
Prosecution states that the suspects today at Parliamentary Avenue and Oasis Mall Nakumatt made a procession in the middle of the road while carrying placards demanding the resignation of the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, an act not authorized by law and therefore annoying the public.
It’s further alleged that the suspects publicly conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace.
Various lawyers led by the Uganda Law Society President Bernard Oundo represented the accused persons where hundreds of their relatives and friends attended court to stand surety while others were in solidarity.
Meanwhile, chaos ensued at court after the remand of the protestors as scores were also arrested from within court premises as they protested the remand of their colleagues.
