Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Kakeeto Imran (17), a chapati maker, who later disclosed the identities of his accomplices.
Kampala: Security forces have arrested 19 suspects and recovered illegal items during an operation aimed at curbing criminal activities in Namugongo, Nansana and Bweyogerere.
The targeted operation was conducted in the Kireka Railway Zone on January 29 at around 9 AM, following intelligence reports linking small bars and a video hall along the railway line to the sale and smoking of opium. Authorities suspect these activities contributed to crime and insecurity in the area.
According to SSP Patrick Onyango, the operation was a coordinated effort between uniformed police officers, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and local leaders.
Onyango asserted that during the operation, 14 suspects were arrested, recovered opium as evidence and suspects have been charged with possession of narcotics.
The arrested individuals are currently detained pending court proceedings, while security agencies continue efforts to eradicate drug-related crimes along the Kireka railway line.
In a separate operation, police in Nansana conducted an intelligence-led raid in Kyebando village, targeting a notorious panga-wielding gang responsible for a wave of attacks in Kampala and its surroundings.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Kakeeto Imran (17), a chapati maker, who later disclosed the identities of his accomplices.
This led to the arrest of five more suspects, Manaishimwe Emable (23), Nyweza Aaron (20), Muyingo Mike (24) and Agaba Godfrey (18), all boda boda riders and Mutebi John (17), a resident of Kyebando Kabulengwa.
The Uganda Police Force has stepped up operations targeting drug trafficking, robbery, and gang-related crimes to enhance public safety in Kampala and surrounding areas.
